English Festival
Every year at my lovely School #8, the English faculty hosts a ten day English festival (which they call “English Decade”), where all students are encouraged to incorporate more English into their daily routines as well as participate in the extra activities held during the festival. They had scheduled this year’s festival to be held over Valentine’s Day, and the activities included weather reports being read over the PA in English, a Valentine’s Day card exchange, an English Club with special PCV guests Mike and Ashley, and a team competition in English exercises with the 7th graders. The whole ordeal culminated in a concert starring the 10th and 11th grades. Each grade is split into three or four groups, each of which was invited to prepare an act for the concert. Most of them picked songs that they could sing and/or dance to. I wrote a rap for the girls from 11A, and a rendition of Aesop’s “The Tortoise and the Hare” for 10B. I also played guitar for a group singing “Lean On Me” as well as for Mike and I to sing Semisonic’s “Closing Time.” There was a band that played “Yellow Submarine” and a group break-danced to a hip-hop song. The festival went extremely well, with no boos or rotten vegetables, and since then I’ve received a few Hey-Guitar-Man!-s in the halls. I hope to have pictures and videos up soon.
