An Epic Game or Don't Mess With Rally Caps

Summer is just chugging along at a steady pace, as we're about to plow into August. With adventures on the horizon including an orphanage camp, ridiculously ambitious 4 day hike, 24th birthday, trip to Bayanaul, preparation for the next school year and for taking the GRE in September, I thought I'd take a second to post a friend's rendition of the awesome events which took place yesterday at the river.

Put your hands together for Team USA/KAZAKHSTAN and guest writer Andrey Khomutovskiy.

An Epic Game or Don't Mess With Rally Caps
By Andrey Khomutovskiy

The background is pretty simple. We went to a beach to have some fun. After half an hour of playing the fool we decided to play American football with local guys. They were really excited about playing against us, because they were 110% rookies, and there were two Americans between us.

Well, here are the lineups:
USA/ KAZAKHSTAN :
Felipe Montgomery
Michael Mesquita
Andrey Khomutovskiy ("the Long One")
Alexander Shinguroff (a journalist)

JUST KAZAKHSTAN:
1st guy from the beach we played with
2nd guy from the beach we played with
3rd guy from the beach we played with
4th guy from the beach we played with
(I hope I got their names right)

After some time we realized that our international squad was losing 6:9. We decided to play to 10, and the JUST KAZAKHSTAN team was reeeealy happy to be beating the U.S. citizens in their own game. I felt just a little bit sorry for myself and very much sorry for Phil and Mike. How often do you teach someone to play a game you were born to play, and get beaten? So, there you go. It was close to the end. For some reason, Philip took a baseball cap from his girlfriend Gulmira, who was watching this disaster, turned it inside out and put it back on her head, looking very upbeat. It was supposed to give us some luck that we needed. Nobody but he and Mike believed in it, of course. Somehow we made it to 9:9 and in 2 more minutes we were shaking hands with the other team: Mike made the last touchdown. It was over and we won... I'm not superstitious, but I'll never mess with rally caps!

Another teaching moment -- about rally caps. I imagine that, too, had been an alien concept to the non-US players and viewers.

Great job, all!
