New Address, Updates

I've been reading my Peace Corps Welcome Book, along with a booklet called "A Few (Minor) Adjustments," that I've received recently, and I've learned quite a bit. For example, my address for the first three months that I'll be in Almaty (Aug - Nov), my address is:

David Philip Montgomery. PCT
Peace Corps
P.O. Box 257
050022 Almaty
Kazakhstan

I also have the address written in Russian which can expedite delivery if also included on a package or envelope - email me if you'd like it. Mail tends to take 4-8 weeks to go back and forth, and they say the smaller the package, the better. I would LOVE to receive mail while I'm gone. I will most likely have some sort of internet access, even if it is once a month, but if not, or if it really is once a month, I'll be trying to write letters. If you want letters while I'm gone, just send me your physical address and I'll do it.

A few other things I've learned:
  • Kazakhstan gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
  • Phone calls home cost $1.50-$6.00 a minute and have to be "ordered" or requested at a post office and can take from 30 minutes to 3 hours to connect the call.
  • I will be living with a family for sure for the first 9 months (3 month training, first 6 months of service) and might have other housing options after that, depending on the placement.
  • Horse meat is the Kazakh national favorite.
  • Chess is a national pastime.
  • Soccer is "extremely popular."
  • Temperatures can get to -40F in the winter to 110F in the summer, depending on the region.
I'm getting pretty excited and am slowly working on packing and getting everything arranged so I can be gone for 27 months. Russian has been on hold for a week or so, but I'm going to get back into it soon, I swear.

Mmmmm, horse meat. I vaguely remember a joke around the time of the Kentucky Derby that the loser became the new menu item at McDonald's.

Sarah and I would love to get mail whenever you have the time, especially if the internet is not going to be readily available. Our address is 2958 Dunlavin Way Charlotte, NC 28205. Also, pass me your Russian translated address to, so we make sure we can get something to you.
